LOCATION
Brownwood is centrally located near the heart of Texas with an excellent highway system and is easily accessible from Dallas-Fort Worth, Austin, Abilene, San Angelo, and San Antonio. Brown County had a 2004 population estimate of 38,183 while Brownwood's population in 2007 reached nearly 20,000. Although Brownwood is the County seat for Brown County, there are many other friendly communities nearby.
Early: When folks in Brownwood go to the movies, they're actually in Early, Texas, Brownwood's next-door neighbor. Not only is Early the site of the area's shopping mall and movie theater, but Early also features its own school system, a thriving economic base and wholesome environment. For those looking for work, new business opportunities and a place to raise a family, Early has strong appeal.
Bangs: Another place to call home is nearby Bangs. Bangs offers quality education, low cost of living and city utility services in a small community environment. Other Brown County communities include Blanket, Brookesmith, May and Zephyr. Brownwood is also relatively near to larger cities in Texas. Austin, the state capital, is just 140 miles to the southeast, and Dallas is only 160 miles to the northeast. Abilene is a short 70 miles away, too. Brownwood's location along two major Texas highways makes these large metropolitan centers within reach. HEALTHCARE
Brownwood Regional Medical Center, www.brmc-cares.com, is a 196 bed facility which includes the state of the art James Walker Cancer Facility. The area has 70 highly qualified physicians in the area which continue to be an attraction to retirees and families concerned with medical needs. BRMC not only serves Brownwood but also provides care for surrounding communities with four One Source clinics. They are located in Early, Cross Plains, Rising Star, and San Saba.

EDUCATION
Brownwood Public Education is served by the Brownwood Independent School District consisting of 3 elementary schools, 3 intermediate schools, and 1 high school. Brownwood I.S.D. has the most extensive college-prep curriculum in the Brown County Area. Brownwood High School offers Advanced Placement courses as well as dual credit enrollment opportunities with Howard Payne University and the Texas State Technical College in Brownwood. The high school also offers four years of both Spanish and French as well as a wide range of business and technology courses. With approximately 1000 students in the high school, there is a wide array of both curricular and extra-curricular opportunities. In addition to advanced coursework, students can participate in outstanding Theatre Arts programs, Fine Arts programs, athletics, Future Farmers of America leadership contests, as well as other career and technology competitions.
Private school facilities include Living Word Christian Academy and Trinity Christian Academy.

RECREATION
Brownwood has always been known for its many sprawling green areas and vast recreational opportunities. Brownwood is truly a community that for all ages to enjoy.
Coggin Park is a child friendly park with beautiful pecan tree-lined lanes and an inviting shade. In addition to the brand new playground for children, there's a bicycle/walking trail, soccer fields, tennis courts and a party pavilion.
Riverside Park is a family favorite located on the banks of the Pecan Bayou on the Ft. Worth Highway. Every Year Riverside Park hosts the annual Fourth of July Festival for the city. Pecan trees, playgrounds, picnic sites with grills for cooking and a family of ducks welcome visitors to this park.
Alcorn Park located on the corner of Fourth Street and Indian Creek near Woodland Heights Elementary, is not only a popular place for children; well-lit tennis courts and a practice soccer field, bring visitors of all ages to this relaxing area.
Cecil Holman Parks is on the extension of North Austin Avenue, just across from the Hardin School building. This memorial park has a playground, picnic tables and areas for softball and soccer. It is also the home of the Bennie Houston Community Center and Swimming Pool and is the site for Brownwood's annual Juneteenth celebration as well.
Festival Park is a wonderful wooded area found near Gordon Wood Stadium, which hosts the annual Depot Art Festival. Its shady area and tree-lined trails are perfect for picnicking, hiking and bike rides.
Center Avenue Park, the newest park in Downtown Brownwood opened the fall of 2003, located at the corner of Baker and Center Avenue. The park is used for a variety of community events, such as, an outdoor music venue and gathering place for downtown residents. Local artist, Don Morelock, was commissioned to provide the artwork for the reflecting wall, "Brownwood Coming into the Age of the Railroad".
Brownwood Country Club is a golfers paradise. The 18 hole layout offers fun to all golfers with it's great bentgrass greens and open fairways. A driving range, chipping green (with bunkers) and a large putting green allow golfers to sharpen their skills. An Olympic sized swimming pool and excellent lake for fishing round our the country club as a superb recreational facility. Brownwood's Country Club also has a newly renovated clubhouse offering fine dining and a classy environment for any occasion.
Lake Brownwood State Park is 537 acres of rustic beauty and tranquility with miles of shoreline. Wildflowers, white-tail deer, water fowl and other critters can all be observed in their natural setting. Water Sport enthusiasts flock to Lake Brownwood to enjoy Water-skiing, boating and just swimming around the docks. There's also plenty of room to camp, picnic, launch your boat and simply enjoy the beautiful scenery.
